ClassRunner and Moodle

ClassRunner manages your classes using a robust, open-source e-learning software solution called Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). Check out some of the many powerful features below, or look here for even more details:

You will have full control over the contents of your website. With your Administrator user id, you will be able to manage users, their roles & permissions, courses structure & content all other features available within Moodle.

A full teacher has full control over all settings for a course, including restricting other teachers. Choice of course formats such as by week, by topic or a discussion-focused social format.

  • Flexible array of course activities - Forums, Journals, Quizzes, Resources, Choices, Surveys, Assignments, Chats, Workshops.
  • Recent changes to the course since the last login can be displayed on the course home page - helps give sense of community.
  • Most text entry areas (resources, forum postings, journal entries etc) can be edited using an embedded WYSIWYG HTML editor.
  • All grades for Forums, Journals, Quizzes and Assignments can be viewed on one page (and downloaded as a spreadsheet file).
  • Full user logging and tracking - activity reports for each student are available with graphs and details about each module (last access, number of times read) as well as a detailed "story" of each students involvement including postings, journal entries etc on one page.
  • Mail integration - copies of forum posts, teacher feedback etc can be mailed in HTML or plain text.
  • Custom scales - teachers can define their own scales to be used for grading forums, assignments and journals.

Using your Administrator user id, you will be able to manage user accounts, their roles and permissions.

  • Each person requires only one account for the whole server - each account can have different access.
  • Teachers may have editing privileges removed so that they can't modify the course (eg for part-time tutors).
  • Security - teachers can add an "enrollment key" to their courses to keep out non-students.
  • They can give out this key face-to-face or via personal email etc.
  • Teachers can enroll students manually if desired. Teachers can unenrol students manually if desired, otherwise they are automatically unenrolled after a certain period of inactivity (set by the admin).
  • Students are encouraged to build an online profile including photos, description.
  • Email addresses can be protected from display if required.

Resources can be prepared files uploaded to the course server; pages edited directly in Moodle; or external web pages made to appear part of this course. # A Text Page Resource # A Text Page (markdown formatting) Resource # A Web Page Resource # A Web Page (opens in a new window) Resource # A Web Link (opens in a new window) file # A Web Link (framed) file # A Web Link (with parameters) file # A Directory file # A Label Resource Links to uploaded files (Moodle automatically assigns the icons according to the file type): # An image file # An MP3 file sound file # A Flash file (opened in a new window) # A Windows Media file (opens in a new window) # An Office file Powerpoint presentation # A PDF file.

Assignments enable teachers to grade and provide comments for uploaded files and assignments created on and off line. The teacher may choose whether to prevent late submissions, whether to allow students to resubmit their assignment (for re-grading) and whether to receive email alerts when students add or update their submission (except for offline assignments). * Upload a single file assignment * Online text assignment * Offline assignment * Advanced uploading of files assignment .

It is in forums that most discussion takes place. Forums can be structured in different ways, and can include peer rating of each posting. The postings can be viewed in a variety for formats, and can include attachments. # A Standard forum for general use # Each person posts one discussion Forum # A single discussion.

A Workshop is a peer assessment activity with a huge array of options. It allows participants to assess each other's projects, as well as exemplar projects, in a number of ways.

The Chat module allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion via the web. This is a useful way to get a different understanding of each other and the topic being discussed.

A lesson delivers content in an interesting and flexible way. It consists of a number of pages. Each page normally ends with a multiple choice question. Navigation through the lesson can be straight forward or complex.

The Survey module provides a number of verified survey instruments that have been found useful in assessing and stimulating learning in online environments.

Here a teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses. This can be useful as a quick poll to stimulate thinking about a topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course; or to gather research consent.

This activity allows participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary. The entries can be searched or browsed in many different formats.

This module allows the teacher to design and set quiz tests, consisting of multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions and more. Each attempt is automatically marked, and the teacher can choose whether to give feedback or to show correct answers.

A wiki is a web page that anyone can add to or edit. It enables documents to be authored collectively and supports collaborative learning. Old versions are not deleted and may be restored if required.

The Moodle software package is Copyright © 1999 onwards, Martin Dougiamas under the GNU GPL. Feel free to visit http://docs.moodle.org/en/Getting_started_for_teachers to learn more about the system and its many features.
